If a person could offer the same or better tools for free, they would be doing the entire thing wrong. A free app would go viral. Something like Affinity did with a “buy-a-Mac” ad. It’s not about the art, it’s about the experience. Look at some of the user reviews in the app store. That’s it.

Best image editing software Ive used in a while with the actual editing tools working very well, supports layers just like Photoshop, easy to use with a very satisfying design workflow. This is a clean program with nice themes to match its clean feel, intuitive interface and solid software. The biggest drawback of Affinity Designer is the lack of good tutorials for more complex image editing, in particular scaling images. You cant tell the difference between 50%, 100%, 200% just by looking at the percentage and the effect is a little difficult to control. I also cant figure out how to fix a cropped image or bring an image back into its original dimensions. Tracing needs work though, you can use the Magic Wand to trace a colour using a selection on another layer but you cant control what colour, shape, size etc you want to trace. So its not really all that magical and seems a bit hit and miss and a little frustrating.

My first impression of Affinity Photo is, wow. Ive used Photoshop in the past to do just about everything I do now, with image editing being on the cutting edge for a while now. But, this is fast, it just seems like its in the right place. And its a very well thought out program. The workflow to me is seamless and it just works. All the effects and styles are available, and the workspace functionality is awesome. Youve got a great selection of effects in a variety of styles, with a great blending mode facility, all the filters you need, and more. And you can easily import popular PS brushes, which makes laying the design out a breeze, they just drop right in. Ive now moved from Photoshop to Photo, as my tool of choice for basic image editing, although Photo does work for advanced image editing as well. The only place Photo falls a little short for me is in copying and pasting elements, but you can also open native PSX files in Photo too. And, the only flaw in Photo, is the limitation of only being able to save an image in one file format at a time. You cant open and save multiple files at the same time. But, its not a huge problem, and wouldnt for me anyway.

I am really enjoying the Affinity products and always have a good experience. They provide some great extra features that you do not get with the Adobe Creative Cloud app. I have a couple of wishes that they add more functionality such as better text support, something they should do and the ability to work with pictures if the quality is good. Good vector drawing features, while small, are starting to make it a serviceable place to create web buttons for example. I’ve been using Affinity Designer for about one year, it’s also their earlier program, PhotoPlus Express.

4. How do I install a font? Answer: One of the strongest features of Affinity Designer is the ability to import and use system fonts. You can do this by opening the ‘App Libraries’ option and look at the different folders for fonts. You should find your system font folder. If you place your system fonts in there and choose ‘Load System Fonts’ in the ‘Library’ menu, you can use those fonts in your designs.

If you’re using Photoshop, you’ll find a separate option for including textures in Photoshop. In Affinity Designer, everything is done through a text list, so I cant think of a way to use images as symbols. If you know how to do that in Inkscape, please let us know. We think this is a new feature, or maybe we’re completely wrong. I have been looking at this, but havent tried anything.
