Does this make DirectX 12 a must have at the DX12 reveal? I’m not going to say it does, but I think that of the benefits listed above, it’s the only one that really makes up for the fact that you’re going to have to buy a new graphics card. If there is one thing you need to know before diving into Bad Company 2 or any of the next DX11 titles, its that DX11 isnt 100% backwards compatible with DirectX 9. I mean, its not something thats completely out of hand. If you try to call a DirectX 9 function in DX11, youll get an error message telling you the function doesnt exist. You can deal with the error and function, but it wont do much for game development, as the API just doesnt function. To make matters worse, DX11 has been subject to various levels of fatal, abortive, and buggy conditions that are prone to crashing a game.
So what exactly is the DX11 API? Its not like Direct3D. Instead, it looks more like a layer on top of Direct3D (the OGL layer). This is mostly a continuation of the DirectX9 OGL stuff, only now its including the DirectCompute and DXGI interfaces. D3D11 does the same things as Direct3D, but with a few tweaks.

What is DirectX 11 good for?
On DirectX 12, there is a cap to how many threads a game can utilize per API. Considering that the underlying technology of DirectX 12 is similar to download DirectX 11 and can be used with DX11 source code, this should give even more benefit to DX12 in the long run. AMD themselves stated that the total threads are currently capped to 32 (although this is just a confirmed figure for DX12) and “others will come”. There is definitely a reasonable belief that the entire platform can see a boost in both performance and efficiency.
Regardless of which API you use, the core enhancements we can look forward to in the future will include better texture and shader management, better API optimizations, and more performance improvements in general. This graphics architecture was designed specifically for next-gen consoles, and the fact that Microsoft has both APIs should allow for more DirectX11 games to enjoy the benefits of the new API.
This new driver makes a few changes to both FidelityFX Super Resolution and Radeon Software. The first thing is that a few improvements to the resizing process. FSR was pretty smooth in terms of gaming performance, but the resizing was incredibly slow.
That has now been rectified. The second thing is that there are new options when playing back games. FidelityFX Super Resolution has a bunch of options to help you capture gameplay at any time. You can play, pause, capture and a few other things. Theres also new audio options. This is good for people who have missed important highlights of a game because they were eating a sandwich, or playing a video game of some other sort.
Also, the resizing now works with the Dual monitor option. This means that the game can either stretch to fill both monitors or each monitor can be independent, which is great for multitasking.
DirectX 12 takes this to an entirely new level. It gives developers the ability to use all available cores. In simple terms, you might be using the CPU only for rendering, and the GPU for doing the actual game logic. If you set the game to run with 8 GPUs, the game can now be run on all 8 available GPUs. In the days of DX9, you couldnt do this very easily due to the way parallel programming is implemented in DX9. In DX12, all these cores are treated equally and the driver automatically decides which one to give data to.
However, one huge downside is that this takes up a lot of memory. You need to allocate memory for each GPU and program. The only saving grace here is that the memory available is shared among all cores.
